Colgate President, Dr. Brian Casey, Selected for McCaffree Award

The Executive Board of the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) has selected Dr. Brian Casey for its Charles McCaffree Award. The McCaffree Award is presented annually to an individual connected to the sport of swimming who has achieved outstanding success outside of the pool.

As a 200 butterflyer and captain of the 1985 Notre Dame team, Casey honed his leadership skills and came to understand the true meaning of persistence trudging across the frozen South Quad to dive into Rockne Memorial Pool.

A double major in philosophy and economics, Casey developed a passion for higher education that led him Stanford Law school and later Harvard where he earned his doctorate in the history of American civilization. After working on Wall Street, Casey was named as assistant provost at Brown University where he lead academic planning across the arts and sciences. In 2005 he returned to Harvard as associate dean for academic affairs in the faculty of arts and sciences. In 2008 he was appointed president at DePauw University. At DePauw established a new financial aid endowment, raising more than $70 million in funding for aid. He also launched DePauw’s first comprehensive capital campaign in nearly two decades, raising $270 million towards the $300 million goal within one year. Casey moved on to become President of Colgate University in 2016. At Colgate, Casey is refocusing a commitment to Colgate's core identity: academic excellence and an immersive residential program in the liberal arts, preparing Colgate's students for well-rounded lives and careers.

That love of swimming has continued throughout his career. He suits up to work out with the Raiders several mornings each week.

“It’s really fun being president of a school that has a swim team,” he says, quickly adding, “and yes, I can keep up with them still.”
