Freeman was a pioneer in women’s collegiate athletics and made a lasting impact on the swimming community throughout her 31-year coaching career at the University of Minnesota. Her accomplishments included two Big Ten Championships, coaching national champions and numerous All-Americans, and helping pave the way for women in collegiate coaching as one of the first women to serve as a full-time NCAA Division I head coach.

Beyond her competitive accomplishments, Freeman was known for her commitment to the sport, leadership and mentorship of others. The Jean Freeman Scholarship honors that legacy by supporting collegiate coaches who demonstrate the qualities she championed throughout her career.
